When my mother-in-law died in her home in Mumbai on 2nd of this month amid the countrywide lockdown ordered by Modi, no pandit was available for performing her dah sanskar. Her body was cremated with whatever semblance of sombre ritual her children could muster with kind help from two men who came with the vehicle that transported the body to the shamshaan.
The shamshaan had neither any pandit nor even a helper to set up the chita.
(Mind you, shamshaan is not an "essential service" because "proud Hindus" are never disobedient enough to die during weeks-long 'lockdown' ordered by their Great Commander!)
Her daughter-in-law called the panditwho conducts puja at their home on Ganapati festivals to perform the dah sanskar, but he refused, citing the lockdown. This panditalso seemed to be scared of coming anywhere near the body of an elderly person amid all the Coronavirus hysteria generated by Modi and his blind followers and used by the state government to impose a martial law on the people.
This martial law meant hours of wait for obtaining a certification of death by a doctor (who would not visit their home to examine the body) and the kin of the deceased being stopped several times by the police on their way to BMC office.
A few days before her death, the police forced her son off the taxi he was travelling in midway to the hospital where she was undergoing treatment. Stranded on the highway, her son had to call one of his friends to be driven back home.
And transporting her from hospital to home took six hours of wait for an ambulance.
This martial law has also meant that not a single relative, friend, or even neighbour has been able to visit the bereaved family when they need them most to resolve their grief.

And, just like after those terrorist attacks, the world has united and forcefully responded. No, we haven’t invaded Iraq again (well, actually, we did bomb them a little), but we have locked down almost the entire planet, virtually shut down the global economy, and are scaring the masses into a state of unprecedented mass hysteria.
Police are patrolling the streets of Europe, checking people’s “permission-to-go-outside” papers.
In the U.K., soldiers are standing by to assist with “protecting possible quarantine zones,” or to “cope with the breakdown of civil society.” Israel is tapping its formerly secret collection of everyone’s mobile phone records to identify people who might be infected, and assorted “others who need to be quarantined.”
Macron (now relieved of his Gilets Jaunes problem!) is ready to “rule by decree” if necessary. California is “prepared to enact martial law.” The U.S. military is “prepared to deploy in support of potential extraordinary missions,” including “quelling civil disturbances.”
The U.S. Department of Justice is asking Congress for the power to detain people indefinitely. The British Parliament is on the brink of passing an emergency “Coronavirus Bill” that will (among other unsettling provisions) grant authorities the power to arrest and indefinitely quarantine anyone they deem a “potentially infectious person” … or, in other words, pretty much anyone they want.
